PALMA
MOVIE goers are in for a blockbuster weekend here in Majorca with three of the most eagerly awaited films of the year premiering in English tomorrow.
The production everyone is talking about and has been enjoying blanket global media coverage is 2012. But The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the sequel to the hugely popular and now cult vampire romance thriller Twilight is also going to be showing in English as is Triage starring Colin Farrell, Spanish screen diva Paz Vega and the veteran Sir Christopher Lee.
Triage focuses on the psychological effects of war on a photo journalist. It is based on the novel of the same name by American veteran war correspondent Scott Anderson and has enjoyed excellent prescreening reviews.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon is one of the most-anticipated movies early in Hollywood's holiday season. Predecessor Twilight made $384 million 231 million pounds at worldwide box offices in 2008, and its young principal actors, Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, shot to overnight stardom.
However, roll every disaster movie into one spectacular package and you will wind up with something close to 2012, Roland Emmerich's latest apocalyptic fantasy. Emmerich and co-writer Harald Kloser have used the Mayan calendar and other end-of-days prophecies for their doomsday scenario, which imagines the world coming to an end in 2012.
SMASH HIT
Eye-popping special effects ensure that the Columbia Pictures release will be a smash hit once it opens tomorrow.
Stitching together highlights from Earthquake, The Poseidon Adventure, Volcano, and even Titanic, the movie follows the fate of a dozen characters as they fall victim to a series of calamities brought on by some kind of solar meltdown.
The issue is not so much what caused the cataclysm but how humanity will respond to the crisis. A venal presidential adviser has the task of handpicking the people who will be allowed to board the atomic-age equivalent of Noah's ark. So the film aims to ask profound questions about how we choose the people worth saving. But profundity is not the director's strong suit.
2012 has an all-star cast headed by John Cusack, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Danny Glover as the President of the United States.
