THE Balearic Environment Ministry and banking group La Caixa's Social Foundation are working together to recuperate natural wetlands, formerly part of the Albufera nature reserve between the municipalities of Alcudia and Pollensa. In the 1970s, a Swedish developer had put forward plans to drain a stretch of the wetlands and turn it into a luxury residential complex criss-crossed with a series of canals, christened the Venice of Majorca. Although the area remains in private hands, the Ministry and the Foundation are to remove building material from the area as a first move towards its restoration to the reserve.
