Balearics had highest crime rate in 2005

THE Balearic islands, Melilla, Ceuta and Alicante had the highest crime rates in 2005, exceeding 70 offences for every 1'000 inhabitants.
This was revealed in a written parliamentary reply to the Spanish MPs Gonzalo Robles, Alicia Sanchez-Camacho and Maria Encarnacio Naharro.
They were interested in knowing the crime figures in the different Spanish provinces in 2005.
The highest crime rate was registered in the Balearics, where there were 79.8 offences recorded for every 1'000 inhabitants.
This was followed by the autonomous town of Melilla, where the crime rate was 77.1 for every 1'000 inhabitants.
After Melilla came Ceuta, where there were 72.2 crimes per 1'000 inhabitants.
Alicante followed these with 71.6 crimes for every 1'000 inhabitants.
The autonomous regions which had more than 60 crimes per 1'000 inhabitants were Valencia with 67.5, Madrid with 66.9, Malaga where there were 64.1 and Huelva with 61.1. At the other end of the scale, Teruel and Zamora were shown to be the provinces with least crime.
Both of these provinces had just 18.3 offences per 1'000 inhabitants.
This was followed by Lugo with 20, Ourense with 20.2 and Soria with 21.8.
