Es Jonquet will have a new look by next summer

IT WILL BECOME ONE OF THE BEST LOOKOUT POINTS IN PALMA

THE front line of the seafront at Es Jonquet will be fully reformed by next summer, according to the calculations of the Balearic government and the Palma city council. They will spend more than one million euros on restoring this emblematic part of the city, with its windmills overlooking the Paseo Marítimo.
Plans include refurbishing the remaining windmills and regenerating the slope.
Work started in October, and yesterday Balearic environment minister Jaume Font and Mayor of Palma Catalina Cirer visited the site.
Council sources said that plans will include creating a garden comprising Mediterranean flora, and repairing the defects which have been detected in the concrete supporting wall. The solution proposed by council technicians consists of making effective use of the different levels of the ground, with differentiated areas of vegetation. The objective is to provide a lookout point over the sea, dominating the Avenida Argentina and the Paseo de sa Vorera by rehabilitating the gardens and public spaces of this part of Es Jonquet. The sources said that the gardens at the base of the windmills would be restored, “covering the wall which was built to ensure the stability of the constructions.” At the same time, the finishing touches to the promenade will be made, making the area one of the best lookout points over the sea.
The remaining windmills of Es Jonquet will also be restored.
The council sources said that this was an operation of great technical difficulty because they are badly deteriorated.
