PALMA
PALMA City Council is currently investing in an ambitious pet-friendly project which will not only involve the opening of three macro dog walking areas but also a number of small pet parks in the city and also new veterinary facilities and services at the Son Rues municipal dog pound.
The first phase of the project is the construction of the 250'000 hospital at Son Reus which will also include isolation areas for dogs with infectious illnesses.
This new centre should be open by the end of this year and there is also going to be a complete revamp of how abandoned dogs and cats are looked after at the pound so that they are in the best possible health when adopted by a new owner.
But, Palma City Council's pro-pet project does not end at Son Reus.
Also by the end of this year, three new city centre dog parks should be open near Lluis Sitjar, Andreu Torrens and Torrent de Sa Riera.
These are going to be pioneering dog parks which will be fitted with sanicans waste bins.
In the new year, the council plans on opening its three macro parks in the Falca Verde Park and Sagrat Cor in Palma along with one at the Sa Ribera Park along the Playa de Palma.
These parks are going to be for exclusive use of dogs and their owners and dogs will be able to roam free off the leash.
However, those classified as dangerous dogs will be banned from the especially landscaped macro parks which will be patrolled by wardens.
In total, the three macro parks will cover an area of over 51'000 square metres.
The first to open is going to be the one on the green belt between the Lluis Sitjar stadium and calle Andreu Torrens.
This dog park will cover an area of 14'000 square metres and this will be the model for all the other parks the council intends to set up over the winter.
The 19'000 square metre Sagrat Cor park in the Son Espanyolet neighbourhood will be open from 8am to10am and then 8pm to 10pm.
