ON Saturday, members of Spirit of Spain attended the first in a planned series of literary lunches.
The writer and broadcaster Leonard Pearcey from Deya was invited to tell how he turned Gordon West's 1920s travel journal Jogging Round Majorca into a 1990s best seller through his BBC Radio 4 readings and found out more about the background to the book and about West himself and the Soller muleteer Don Juan. The venue was one of Archduke Luis Salvador's former properties now a restaurant, Son Moragues on the outskirts of Valldemossa.
Said Leonard Pearcey: It was a privilege to be invited to give this inaugural talk in such an atmospherically apt setting for the book. A most enjoyable experience!
That opinion seemed to be echoed by the members of his audience through their rapt attention, hearty laughter and extended applause.
While this was the first of SOS's occasional talks on aspects of Majorca away from the mainstream, for November they resume their programme of visits with a trip to Tirme Technology Park. Leonard Pearcey recently recorded the English commentary for David Hare's DVD on The Soller Train and Tram.
