Island cruise industry defies global credit crunch

STAFF REPORTER
BETWEEN the beginning of January and the end of September this year, the port of Palma had been visited by more than 500 cruise ships carrying a total of over one million passengers - a further one hundred ships are expected by the time 2009 comes round.

The Balearic Ports Authority released a report yesterday as evidence of how the cruise sector of tourism in the region has been undergoing a boom period. In spite of the global credit crunch, the industry has grown by 6 percent in the Islands so far this year.
