CALA Major and San Agustin are facing an uncertain future, as the end of the season is bringing the closure of nearly all its hotels, many of which will not open again. The cause of the closure? On the one hand, according to some, there are no tourists, and on the other, the hotel owners, in search of greater profitability, are going to convert their hotels into apartments.
Of the five hotels which remain, two have already closed and another two will close on October 31, said Maria Jose from the costume jewellery shop. And if they close we will have no tourists, and we make our living from them. Juan, from the El Tivoli bar, is of the same opinion. Up to now we had 1'800 tourists, and if the hotels close we will be without them, and then what will we do?
What is happening to the area is something which nobody can miss, there are so many for transfer and for sale posters.
REGRETS
Xisca Morro, from the Es Forn bakery, said she regrets the closures, because senior citizens keep me going. So if the hotels close in winter, then who will buy my ensaimadas?
Samira, from the bar Haiti, said that a month ago the bar was full now it is completely empty. Cala Major, which until now has lived from tourism, is about to become a normal district, it's the way things have turned out. Jose Antonio Vasquez works in the Uto Palace's hotel shop and is also a trade unionist. They told us that the hotel will close on October 31, but I asked them to give it to us in writing. However, it will not surprise me at all if they close before then. The worst is that people will be out of work, and many businesses which made their living from the tourists who stayed in the hotel will have to rethink what they will do now, he explained. Luis Pons and Maria Garcia, who recalled that 25 years ago there were more than 40 hotels and now there will be only one left, think that from now on things will be very different in the area.
Future is uncertain for the once bustling Cala Major
