THE co-founder of leading Balearic olive oil producer Olis Caimari, Simó Mateu, died in the early hours of yesterday after battling a long illness.
Mateu was extremely well known in the village of Caimari, the heart of the region's olive oil production, and across Majorca.
The mayor of Caimari, Pedro Seguí, yesterday paid tribute to Mateu and said that the village is deeply saddened by his death.
He was a hard working man, a leading industrialist and always put the village first. He carried Caimari in his heart - he named his company after the village and, through his products, our name was carried all over the world, the mayor said.
The funeral will take place today.
