Unemployment falls for fifth month

THE number of unemployed people registered in the Balearic Job Centres fell by 1'754 people in September, which represents a 5.64 percent fall in respect to the previous month. This brings the total unemployed figure on the islands to 29'362, confirmed yesterday the Ministry for Work and Social Affairs.
These September figures are the fifth consecutive month of decreases in the unemployment status. It is also four points more than the Spanish average unemployment reduction of -1.82 percent. The Balearic Islands registered the biggest decrease to unemployment in this last month, and was only behind Asturias (9.04 percent), Madrid (8.15 percent), Cantabria (7.3 percent) and the Basque region (6.76 percent). The reduction to unemployment figures was felt in all the sectors, with the exception of agriculture (which increased by six people). But it was the construction sector which faired better, with 724 less unemployed workers. The end of the tourist season also meant more unemployed people, with 1'054 tourism service workers losing their jobs, mostly female workers (649).
By island and without any comparable data, Majorca has 23'451 unemployed people, followed by Ibiza and Formentera with 3'889 and Minorca with 2'022.
Men benefited more from this decrease in unemployment figures, with more over 25 year old males getting jobs. Whilst around 362 female job seekers found employment in September in the Balearic Islands.
