A Palma-based cruise ship with 1'476 passengers aboard has suffered serious mechanical problems off the coast of Genoa.
Island Cruises in Palma confirmed that their ship Island Star, had experienced a power outage. Power and water have been restored to the passenger areas although engineers on board are still working on the ship's engines before it can continue its onward journey. Every assistance is being given to passengers on-board and a support team is presently en-route to the ship, Island Cruises said in a statement yesterday. One passenger told the Bulletin last night that the ship had stopped moving on Tuesday night and was at sea, going nowhere. We have been told that our cruise will probably be cut short. Everyone on board from the captain downwards is being most helpful, the passenger told the Bulletin by telephone.
Scores of Majorca residents are believed to be aboard the vessel.
