OLIVE HARVEST DOWN BY NEARLY TWO THIRDS IN SOME DISTRICTS OF MAJORCA

THIS year's olive harvest looks set to be a third less in volume than in 2007 with the farming unions and the Olive Oil regulation department of the Council of Majorca saying yesterday that the figure could plummet to almost two thirds less in some regions of the central plain of the island known as the Pla.

The Sierra Tramuntana will be bucking the trend however, with pickings in that region being predicted to exceed those of last year. Experts explained that the ups and downs of the olive harvest are due to completely natural causes, with some years producing prodigious quantities and others, a poorer crop.
