Platform seeks meeting with Matas to demand better park

THE “Railway Park” platform has written to Jaume Matas, leader of the Balearic Government, asking for an “urgent” meeting to discuss the park, begging him to approach it with an “open attitude”. A spokesman said yesterday that they wanted the meeting so that they can set out their proposal for a bigger urban park on the surface where the train lines are being put underground in Palm, instead of a road as the city council plans. The spokesman added that their letter asks Matas for an “urgent” meeting, because the work on the surface has already been started; and for an “open attitude” because a politician has to demonstrate that he is flexible and knows how to put things right; and with “time” so that he can listen to their proposal calmly.
VISION OF THE FUTURE
According to the President of the Platform, Angels Fermoselle, their intention is to convince Matas with arguments that Palma, as the capital of the Balearics, should be a city with a vision of the future.
She said that the citizens of Palma had lost one thing after another, such as the Parque de Ses Estacions (the Stations Park, which has been virtually destroyed by the work on the railway, and will eventually form part of the bigger Parc de les Vies) and Son Fortesa but this park could rectify that.
The Palma city council has said on repeated occasions that it wants Calle Jacint Verdaguer converted into another road into Palma, while the Platform wants it to be a green zone, and part of the park.
The Platform has collected thousands of signatures for a petition to back its demands.
