Palma should follow Alcudia's example in war on street binge drinking

By Humphrey Carter

PALMA
THE problem of the allegedly illegal street parties, or “Botellon” as they are known locally, has reared its ugly head again in Palma with residents along the Paseo Maritimo calling on the city council to take some decisive action - once and for all.

Paseo Maritimo residents have been fighting for action over the past few years and hoped that a change in control of the city council from conservative Partido Popular to the Socialist would make a difference but the problem appears to have got even worse.

The weekend street parties once contained to the city centre end of the sea front have not only stretched all the way along the Paseo Maritimo but the binge drinking has spilled over into the ferry terminal car park which, on Sunday mornings, looks like a battle ground with bottles and plastic bags strewn across the grass.
