Mrs Anne Bowman, from Kingsbridge in Devon, was rushed to the General Hospital in Muro in May 2001, after suffering a heart attack just three days into her two week holiday. She spent three weeks in hospital, her husband John staying at the nearby Hotel Condesa de la Bahia in order to be by her side.
Mrs Bowman travelled back to Britain with a doctor escort when she was well enough and then spent another week in hospital there, before she was allowed to return home. Now fully recovered, she and her husband are back at the Condesa de la Bahia on holiday.
They wanted to show their appreciation to the staff of the Muro hospital, who were absolutely wonderful, say Mrs Bowman, who had no history of heart problems until that holiday, and her husband. And to show their appreciation, they presented the staff at the hospital with a framed picture of their beautiful home town in Devon, with a message of thanks engraved on a gold plate in both English and Spanish. The presentation was attended by Antonio Lay, the hospital's manager, Dr Rafael Cantarero, medical director, Sra Carmona Lunday, the interpreter, Javier Cotrino, the head nurse, Sue Palmer, welfare representative for Thomson Hlidays and Pamela Garnett, the hospital's PRO.
