20 evacuated during carpark blaze

OTHER NEWS

Palma.—Fire broke out in the early hours of yesterday morning in a carpark underneath a block of flats in Palma, Emergency Service reported yesterday.
Twenty people were evacuated from their apartments as a precaution whilst the blaze burned two cars, four motorcycles and a boat to a cinder.
The alarm was raised just after midnight when the Balearic 112 Emergency Services received a call to say that fire had started in a property at No. 4, Calle Victoria Peña in Palma. Immediately, the control hub coordinated a response from the Palma Fire Service, the Guardia Civil and ambulance services and all units rushed to the scene.

Apart from the cars, motorcycles and boat which were completely destroyed, a dozen or more cars sustained damage. There were no reports of serious injuries but two people were ferried to Palma's Son Espases hospital reportedly suffering from smoke inhalation.

Once the fire had been extinguished, and the affected area properly ventilated, residents who had had to leave their homes were gradually allowed to return.

The cause of the blaze remains unknown but investigations are continuing.
Local Police commented that many of the residents who were forced to evacuate their homes had already retired for the night and that the alarm had been raised “not a moment too soon.”
