Palma.—Calvia´s 15,000 non-Spanish residents were being urged yesterday to attend a council meeting tomorrow in which the council will pass a motion aimed at replacing the dreaded green residence certificate with our old style residence card.
The council meeting starts at 12pm but the residence permit issue will not be discussed until later because there are other issues on the agenda first, including a motion by the socialist party on the three-language education system. Councillor Angie Guerrero was busy yesterday preparing her speech for today. She has championed this cause in Calvia and it is thanks to her that the motion has actually come to a council meeting.
"It will be nice if as many members of the non-Spanish community could attend the meeting and offer moral support. Also, their presence will underline how important this issue is for the foreign community in Calvia," Councillor Guerrero said yesterday. This is the first time that she has made a speech at council meeting level but her colleagues have said that she will have little problem because it is an issue which is close to her heart.
