Palma. A court in Palma has set a bail of 15'000 euros for the driver supposedly responsible for an accident in the suburb of La Vileta on Thursday this week in which a three-year old girl was killed.
The driver, who failed an alcohol breath test meanwhile remains in prison. He is charged with causing death through gross negligence.
After the accused appeared in court yesterday, the judge at the hearing ruled that unless bail is provided, the driver should remain behind bars.
The accident, which had happened at the junction of Calle Ciri with Santa Ponsa in La Vileta, whilst the girl was out being pushed by her mother in a pram, in fact involved two cars a Seat Ibiza and a Mini.
The two vehicles apparently hit one another but not frontally and the driver of the Mini subsequently appeared to lose all control of the vehicle. It slewed towards the kerbside and as a result of the impact overturned at an area of the pavement where the mother and her daughter had been out walking close to the family home.
The toddler, Emergency Services reported, suffered a severe blow to the head and by the time paramedics had arrived at the scene of the accident, there was nothing they could have done to save her life.
The girl's mother, traumatised, was given on the spot medical assistance and counselling.
The residential community at La Vileta remained in shock yesterday, finding it difficult to come to terms with the tragedy.
