Palma. The German language Mallorca Magazin owned by the Grup Serra publishing company, is a stablemate newspaper of the Majorca Daily Bulletin and was celebrating its 40th anniversary at a glittering party at the Pueblo Español in Palma last Saturday night.
A leading figure in German journalism, star guest Sabine Christiansen has an audience of five million spectators to her weekly televised political debates. She numbers Tony Blair, Donald Rumsfeld and Hillary Clinton among her interviewees.
Christiansen was asked to define her long-standing relationship with Majorca. I've always found it fascinating, she replied. Even when I first came to the island 20 years ago, I felt completely welcome. Over time, I was made to feel that in some small way, I was contributing creatively to Majorca, I've always wanted the best for the island and its people. My husband used to live on Ibiza so I go there with my family sometimes, but we love the mountains of Majorca and in summer we are never far away from the seashore. Pollensa is a favourite haunt.
Questioned over how she saw the future of the island, Christiansen said Majorca has advantages over tourist destinations but it doesn't have a great deal of money at the moment. It's a time for political parties to put differences aside and join forces to save the day. I believe Majorca needs a real visionary, someone who can rise to the economic challenge as well as establish strong environmental policies.
