HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE TAKE PART IN BATTLE OF THE GRAPES

BINISSALEM GIVES NEW MEANING TO TREADING GRAPES IN FIRST BIG EVENT OF FIESTAS

TREADING grapes took on a new meaning yesterday as hundreds of young people in Binissalem threw themselves whole heartedly into the Battle of the Grapes.
This is a relatively new feature of the famous Wine Harvest Festival of Binissalem, which reaches its climax on Sunday.
The battle started shortly after noon and there was no shortage of grapes waiting to be thrown at rivals and trodden underfoot. It was perhaps not so colourful as the tomato battle held on the Peninsula earlier this year, but it was equally messy. However, that was part of the fun. After the battle there was a lunch party, an event that was free for those who had taken part in the battle dressed in the traditional costume of the people who tread the grapes. And if you want to see the traditional way of treading grapes, then there will be a demonstration in Binissalem today (See What's On page for details).
