CAPDEPERA
THE regional Environment ministry has made it clear to Central Government its indignation over the Coastal department's decision to refurbish the beach at Cala Agulla in Capdepera with sand excavated from Banyalbufar.
Environment Quality director, Josep Lliterers, said yesterday that the European Union does not permit this type of extraction which apart from scarring the landscape, would infringe laws protecting the Tramuntana mountain nature reserve of which Banyalbufar forms a part. With a Balearic Environmental Committee already having condemned the project, UNESCO - which has classified the Tramuntana as a Biosphere Reserve - is not going to take the Balearics seriously if we continue to abuse the landscape, said Lliterers. The regional Environment ministry, he added, is going to put up a fight to try and stop the Coastal department going ahead with the sand extraction. We've got a perfectly good alternative which is dredging up sand from the sea bed further out in the same bay of Cala Agulla which will cause no impact on the landscape whatsoever, Lliterers claimed.
