Recession hits Balearic freight and ferry ports

PUBLIC ferry, cruise liner and freight transport activity in Balearic ports has sunk during the first half of the year, said the regional Ports Authority in a report issued yesterday.

Palma, Alcudia, Mahon, Ibiza and La Savina on Formentera have all seen less movement of traffic in terms of ferry passengers, cruise liners and freight. Figures from the report show that during the first six months of the year, ferry passengers totalled 1.428 million, a downturn of 13 percent in comparison with the same period last year.

Analysed according to ports even higher differences between this year and last are brought to light. Palma handled 287'060 passengers during the first six months of 2009 - a full 23 percent less than the same period in 2008. Alcudia lost 7 percent of its ferry passengers and Mahon 27 percent.
