Outrage in Calvia over fly tipping

OTHER NEWS

Calvia.—Do we fully appreciate the excellent refuse collection service which exists on our island? During this extremely hot weather it becomes even more imperative that refuse is collected on a daily basis, so we shouldn't take this vital service for granted.

I became even more aware of what is essentially a thankless and unpleasant task when at the weekend I turned into the narrow lane where I live in Capdella and found myself behind the refuse truck. I had no option but to follow the truck on its many collection points until I reached my home, the smell emanating from the truck wasn't pleasant. The refuse team apologised for the inconvenience: an unexpected courtesy from these unsung heroes who cheerfully go about their business in difficult conditions and who deserve recognition for their sterling work. On the other hand complaints accompanied by photographic evidence of fly tipping in the countryside on the road from Capdella to Puigpunyent reaches me; the obscene sight of builders' detritus, supermarket waste and household furniture litters the road side. It is difficult to see how the perpetrators of this abomination can be brought to justice, but clearly something must be done.

Builders' rubble
Calvia resident Sally Ashworth who brought this lamentable situation to the Bulletin's attention said: “There are six separate locations being used by fly tippers on the Calvia Puigpunyent road, which are spread over 2 km between the 8km and 10km markers. The main content is rubble dumped by builders rather than individuals dumping domestic waste. This route is one of the most beautiful in Majorca and is a main cycle route which is now blighted by this terrible mess. Something must be done before more of our beautiful countryside is ruined in the same way.” The Ayuntamiento of Calvia and Calvia 2000 state that The Deixallería (refuse plant) on the Son Bugadellas Industrial Estate, Santa Ponsa, will accept free of charge a maximum of five sacks of rubbish from private entities. However, if a vehicle displays a tradename or is patently a commercial vehicle then the refuse will not be accepted. Calvia 2000 will pick up unwanted domestic items or garden rubbish if you call: 971 69 92 02. This service is also free of charge and is a great aid to helping keep the countryside as it's meant to be: a habitat for wildlife and a place of beauty for all to enjoy.
