Increase in taxi licences is not necessary say cabbies

by Staff Reporter

PALMA
AT the moment it is not necessary to increase the number of taxi licences, as there are already 1'246 in Palma, according to Ganriel Moragues, the president of the Taxi Drivers Association within PIMEM (the small and medium sized businesses association).

Both he and Julio Nieto, the president of the Taxi Drivers Association in CAEB (the Confederation of Businesses), consider there are enough taxis.
However, they did concede that during the rush hour and especially at weekends it is at times difficult to find an unoccupied taxi.
Both Moragues and Nieto were referring to the recent announcement by Palma's councillor for Mobility, Joaquin Rodriguez, who said that his department will look into the possibility of granting more licences or the possibility of one vehicle having more than one driver, with the object of giving a better service at busy times.

However, Moragues and Nieto do not agree on the best way to solve the problem.
Moragues thinks that there should be more buses at night and the situation at the five taxi ranks in the Paseo Maritimo could be improved.
Nieto on the other hand, thinks that more taxis should be allowed to have a second driver.
