THE Coordination Centre for the 112 Emergency Services in the Balearic Islands received over 9'000 phone calls last weekend when the cold snap produced floods and storms throughout the islands. The Coordination Centre also attended 79 emergency situations last weekend.
The most severe storms and heavy rain occurred last Saturday, and the islands were ready for it with the 112 emergency service flooding plan (Inunbal) activated from 19 until 21 August. On Saturday the centre answered over 5'000 calls, whilst on Sunday they dealt with 4'060 emergency calls.
There were 26 cases of flooding in homes and businesses last weekend, as well as 24 roads which were impossible to use because of the water level. These situations were worst in areas such as Marratxi and Calvia on Saturday. There were eight cases when trees and rocks had fallen into the roads and one fire caused by a flash of lightning.
