PALMA Town Hall and the Balearic Government have agreed to the creation of a fortnightly co-ordination meeting to deal with issues affecting both administrations. The meetings will be chaired by the government's vice-president, Rosa Estarás.
The mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer was addressing the media following talks with Jaume Matas, the President of the Balearics.
It is hoped that these proposed fortnightly meetings will be the mechanism by which we can make up for lost time, following four years in power by the previous government. According to Cirer, this initiative will make it possible to speed up negotiations on outstanding local authority issues which need to be addressed in conjunction with the Balearic government as there are some points that have not been dealt with for years. On the agenda for the administrations are themes related to town planning, health, education and public transport.
The mayor of Palma, Catalina Cirer also announced that both administrations have decided to push for the approval of the Law of Capital Status so that it becomes a reality during the term of power of the present Government. Regarding the underground roadway proposed for the Paseo Marítimo in Palma, Cirer highlighted the fact that the first phase, which will include the area by the Gesa Power Company building running as far as the Avenida Argentina, will be started as soon as possible and gave assurances that in future terms in power, the project will be dealt with in its entirety. She said that the construction of the underground roadway will be carried out according to a timetable, although the work schedule will have to be co-ordinated with other initiatives that are part of future plans for the city. Developing this theme, Palma's mayor pointed out that the possibility will have to be taken into account that Palma will be hosting the America's Cup sailing championships in 2007 which will mean the reconditioning of the Muelle Viejo (Old Wharf) which abuts the Paseo Marítimo. This is included in the overall project of the underground roadway.
The mayor also explained that the construction of a new hospital in Palma is a crucial responsibility for the Town Hall.
They will undertake the demarcation of the most suitable tract of land for its construction.
With this end in mind, local authorities will claim part of the space that the current
