PALMA
HOLLYWOOD actor/producer and Majorcan home owner, Michael Douglas, yesterday joined the 11'400 people who have signed the petition to have the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range declared a UNESCO heritage site for its natural beauty.
Douglas has owned a rural estate in the Tramuntana for over 20 years and yesterday, during a special ceremony at Son Marroig, he signed the petition and gave his full backing to the campaign which has been launched by the Council of Majorca.
Other artists such as Franz Ferdinand, John Mayall and Santiago Auseron have already signed the petition and the bid also has the backing of cultural organisations such as the Robert Graves Foundation and other bodies such as Friends of the Earth, the Balearic College of Architects not to mention the thousands of members of the general public.
The Council of Majorca has been working on the campaign since 2008 and hopes that UNESCO will approve the application next year.
