Train and metro strike going ahead on 20th July

STAFF REPORTER
THE latest meeting between management and the Works Committee of Majorcan Railway Services (SFM) ended in deadlock yesterday, meaning that the third train and metro wildcat strike on 20th July will now go ahead as threatened.

Works Committee President, Alejandro Hoyas, confirmed yesterday that the stoppage will last 24 hours. There have already been two sets of industrial action by SFM staff on the 1st and 7th of this month, triggered - according to Hoyas - by worker demands for improved safety on the trains and by calls for more full-time mechanical personnel.

The management of SFM under the directorship of Jaume Jaume had yesterday handed the Works Committee a document containing the company's proposals for safety and staffing improvements. But Hoyas said his members had rejected them, describing the document as “insulting” because it reportedly only made reference to “more fire extinguishers” and a commitment to more staff only when the company “saw fit.”
