THE Guardia Civil has opened a full investigation into forest fire which devastated 1'000 square metres of pine forest between cala Falco and the playa de Belladona in Calvia yesterday.
According to the fire services, the fire was reported in the early afternoon and three different sources were found along with traces of flammable liquids.
Police suspect that the fire was started on purpose and are treating the incident as arson.
Santa Ponsa fire fighters were helped by members of the Ibanat forestry protection units and an Ibanat helicopter which enabled the emergency services to control the fire relatively quickly and prevent it from spreading.
The region is on forest fire red alert and fire fighters are dealing with an increasing number of minor incidents as temperatures continue to rise and conditions remain dry.
