REPRESENTATIVES from the different Balearic trade unions yesterday ratified the first agreement on the hotel industry Wage Agreement with the management teams from the tourism companies. The agreement gives way to an estimated 5 percent increase in wages in the first tax year, which will be valid for three years.
The secretary general for the CCOO trade union, Ginés Díaz, said that he considers this agreement as a historic milestone. He refers to the fact that this hotel wage agreement has been reached without any industrial action taking place, something which has not happened for the last 30 years, he said. The Hotel Agreement also makes references to the working conditions for temporary staff, who from now on will enjoy the same rights as a person with a fixed term contract, in terms of pay, use of facilities and board. In addition, the agreement increases the amount of redundancy pay up to 12 days per year worked, instead of the usual eight days.
In terms of working conditions, preference will be given to parents with under 7 year olds or with handicapped children for full time-off work at the weekends. The agreement also establishes the clause which states that if a worker is ill due to an accident or an illness on the first day of their holiday away from work, then they will be allowed to postpone the break until they are recovered.
