Council of Majorca in Paris to back its heritage site bid

TRAMUNTANA MOUNTAINS
A delegation from the Council of Majorca was in Paris yesterday to sit in on a meeting of UNESCO and promote the island's bid to have the Tramuntana mountains named as a World Heritage Site.

The Balearics is accutely aware that were the mountains to be listed as a protected site, the economic, touristic and environmental advantages that would be gained would be considerable.

Along with the Tramuntana, 37 other candidates for the prestigious award were being considered yesterday, all of which had previously been vetted by two international conservation organisations.

UNESCO's World Heritage Committee comprises representatives of 21 countries.
