THE first weekend of the summer was overshadowed by a spate of traffic accidents which left four people seriously injured and an elderly motorcyclist killed. The fatal accident happened yesterday morning on the outskirts of Palma.
According to the police, a 61-year-old moped rider was involved in a collision with a lorry at 7.45 at the new roundabout on the Soller road.
Paramedics were at the scene within minutes but, according to the emergency services, there was nothing that could have been done to have saved the victim's life. On Sunday, three accidents, one in the Pollensa area and the other on the Palma to Inca motorway near Marratxi and the third on the Caimari road up to Lluc, left four people seriously injured. The first happened at 5.30 am along the Cala Sant Vincente road. The victims were two hotel workers on their way home but for reasons yet to be confirmed, the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree. The two 30-year-old victims were rushed to Son Dureta hospital in Palma.
At 1pm, two motorbikes, one a Harley Davidson carrying a British couple, collided along the Inca motorway.
The driver of the other motorbike, a Yamaha, was seriously hurt.
The third accident involved a quad bike in an accident along the Caimari road up to Lluc.
The driver was also seriously injured and rushed to Son Dureta hospital.
