CURRENTLY on the island are a group of members of the Mediterranean Garden Society, here, as their name implies, to visit gardens.
Led by Signe Groos, branch head for the Balearic Islands, they have had an action packed two days so far, visiting private gardens all over the island, from Sa Pobla to Son Macia on Sunday. The visitors also had a chance to meet Heidi Giuldemeister, who signed copies of her new book, Gardening the Mediterranean Way, which is packed with practical advice and planting ideas, describing various types of gardens which are suitable for the local climate. Yesterday was spent exploring gardens and patios of the Gothic quarter in Palma, including Can Oleza, with the afternoon left free for visiting the rest of the city. More private gardens are on the schedule for today in Portol and Mancor del Valle.
The Mediterranean Garden Society is a non-profit-making association which acts as a forum for everyone who has a special interest in the plants and gardens of Mediterranean climate regions. Registered in Greece, it has branches all over the world, including the Balearics. Members exchange information and experiences and the Society publishes quarterly journals with articles on diverse aspects of Mediterranean gardening.
More about the Society can be learned on its website at www.MediterraneanGardenSociety.org.
