Briton fights for his life after balcony fall

Palma.—A 25-year-old British holiday maker was fighting for his life in a Palma hospital last night, after having fallen from a seventh floor apartment balcony in Magalluf, less than 24 hours after arriving on the island at the start of his holiday with a group of friends.

The accident happened 02.55am at a block of holiday flats just a couple of hundred metres from Punta Ballena.
According to police sources, the 25-year-old had been out drinking with his friends and on the way back to their apartment block, one of the young men lost the keys to one of the apartments.

Once back at the block of apartments, the 25-year-old decided he was going to jump from one balcony to another and let the guys who were locked out ,in.

Tragically, he apparently lost his balance and fell 20 metres landing on an aluminum roof seven floors below.
Miraculously he was still alive when the paramedics, fire fighters and police reached the scene where fire fighters had to use a special crane to lift him off the roof on which he had landed.

However, he was suffering from serious, multiple injuries.
He was unconscious with serious injuries to the head, face and other parts of his body.
Medical sources said that they also fear he may have suffered internal injuries.
Paramedics stabilised the young man at the scene, put his head in a brace and also secured his spine, before rushing him to Son Espases Hospital, in a critical condition.

The police have opened a full investigation and some eyewitnesses have told officers that some members of the group had been fighting earlier in the evening.

This has been the first balcony accident of this summer season and sadly, there will be more.
Last summer there were over 10 incidents of this kind in Majorca, where four proved fatal, and Ibiza prompting the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and ABTA – The Travel Association, to join forces on a campaign to help prevent balcony incidents among young people in popular holiday resorts.
