Palma.Unemployment across Spain declined at a faster pace in May, data from the Office of Public Employment Services revealed yesterday.
Registered unemployment decreased 1.87 percent month-on-month to 4'189'659 in May.
The latest fall was the biggest for the month of May since 1997, and was faster than April's 1.48 percent decline.
Unemployment among the youth, aged below 25 years, fell 3.61 percent on a monthly basis, while the number of jobless persons above 25 years dropped by 1.65 percent in May.
The number of unemployed in the service sector decreased 1.39 percent, while unemployment in the construction industry dropped 2.75 percent during the month. There was a 2.13 percent fall in the number of jobless in the industrial sector.
It is a positive development that encourages us to continue working, because there are still many people that we help prepare them to return to the labor market, Secretary of State for Employment, Mari Luz Rodriguez, said. The decline in the number of unemployed is the second highest in May since 1997.
Meanwhile, on a year-on-year basis, the number of jobless persons in the country increased 3.04 percent in May.
In May 2010, the annual growth in unemployment was 12.3 percent. At the same time, registered contracts increased 9.04 percent year-on-year to 1'288'914 in May.
