Palma.A group of holiday makers yesterday stumbled across the dead body of a 38-year-old Ecuadorian after having spotted an upturned and wrecked shell of a Citroen ZX car on a farm just off the Lluchmajor to Campos road.
The discovery was made just after 8am and, according to the emergency services, it appears that the driver had lost control of his vehicle, hit a stone wall lining the road and flipped over in to the field, coming to rest against a tree which shattered the rear window.
Wearing seat belt
The accident happened just 1.5 kilometres out of Campos and local fire services and police were on the scene within minutes of the tourists raising the alarm.
Guardia Civil traffic police eventually reached the scene, and all that was found was the lone driver, still wearing his seat belt.
Paramedics were unable to find any signs of life and the accident could even have happened the night before the driver could have been lying there dead for various hours.
Fortunately for the police, inside the victim's jacket was all his documentation, that is who they knew the driver was a 38-year-old immigrant from Ecuador.
Crash investigators from the Guardia Civil Traffic department also confirmed that the engine was stone cold, which also backed up the theory that the fatal accident could have happened on Sunday night.
Way home
Police sources also said that they had no record that the 38-year-old had gone missing which they claim suggest that he was on his way home at the time of the accident.
The body had to be cut free from the wreckage by members of the Council of Majorca fire brigade and the autopsy, which will shed more light on exactly what happened, is due to be carried out this morning.
Ironically, the accident happened at the same black spot' where a Mercedes SLK collided with the stone wall lining the road last year, but there were no fatalities.
