Sunny spell heralds higher temperatures

STAFF REPORTER
FROM this weekend onwards, sunnier and warmer weather is going to set the scene for the rest of May but the Balearics could still be prone to occasional showers, Angel Rivera, spokesman for the National Weather Agency (AEMET)said yesterday.

Rivera said that today is the start of what he described as a “slow recovery” in stability of weather conditions, although he said there will be some rainfall in the Mediterranean on Wednesday. Temperatures, he said, will start to rise due to the presence of an anticyclone hovering over the Atlantic ocean and may quickly reach 30 degrees Centigrade in some southern parts of the country.

He explained, however, that only the eastern flank of the anticyclone is affecting Spain so that there is room for a cold front to move in from Central Europe. “Although temperatures will certainly go up, they will do so very gradually as the chill from the north may put a damper on them,” said Rivera. “If the anticyclone moves out further into the Atlantic, this may even cause temperatures to fall again.” Although spring is definitely here, he added, this is a season where we have to expect change.

As at 12th May, said the spokesman, rainfall levels in Spain were nearly a third above normal. So far this year, Rivera explained, there has been 633 litres per square metre of rainfall whereas it would be usual to expect around 483 litres.
