BALEARIC MINISTER SEES SIGNS OF GREEN SHOOTS

STAFF REPORTER

PALMA

THE rate of unemployment in the Balearics has fallen for the four past consecutive months, albeit slightly, but the Balearic Minister for Finance and Taxation, Carles Manera, said yesterday that the Balearics is going to seriously begin creating new jobs this month for the first time in two years.

According to Manera, the driving force behind the forecast rise in employment is the sharp improvement in the tourism market with over one million more tourists coming to the Balearics this year than in 2010.

Last week, a dozen Majorcan hotel chains committed themselves to helping the unemployed by recruiting extra staff from job centres, but Manera is confident that the increase in tourists is going to benefit all sectors across the Balearics.

The Minister gave the good news to members of the Balearic Economic Committee, which was set up to monitor the recession when it first hit, yesterday.
Manera said that the gradual fall in the number of unemployed over the winter has been very encouraging and claimed that the combination of the recovery of most European economies and the measures introduced by the Balearic government to stimulate the local economy and employment sectors over the past six months, are the reasons that there are now definite signs of a recovery in the Balearics this week.
