A ROYAL END TO EASTER

By Humphrey Carter
KING Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain accompanied by Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia of Asturias and their two daughters, Leonor and Sofia were the centre of attention on Sunday when, as is tradition for the Spanish royal family, they attended Easter mass at Palma cathedral.

Despite the unexpected sudden downpour, thousands of people had turned out to see the royals, in particular the two young Princesses Sofia and Leonor.
An arrival, the royals were greeted outside the Cathedral by the Bishop of Majorca, Jesus Murgui, and the group posed for pictures which drew a huge applause from the public.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia traditionally spend Easter at Marivent Palace but this year were only joined by the Crown Prince and Princess of Asturias and their children.

SMILING
The Duke and Duchess of Palma and the Duchess of Lugo, who are now based in the United States for professional reasons, apparently had other commitments.

Many of the members of the general public braved the rain to also see the two young Princesses who continue to surprise the media, and the photographers in particular, with the apparent ease at which they pose for pictures.

Always smiling and never shy of the banks of flashes, the two Princesses continue to win over the hearts of the public. The Easter Mass at Palma Cathedral marks the end of the Easter celebrations in the capital and, once the rain had ended, the sun came out to provide yet another glorious day.

The good holiday weather served to fill restaurant and bar terraces and the Paseo Maritimo in Palma was bustling with activity all weekend.
The royals will return for their annual summer holidays in Majorca.
