Palma. The Duke, 45 - a former Olympic handball athlete married to Princess Cristina since 1997 - and his business partner Diego Torres are accused of exploiting blue-blood connections to reap more than 5 million euros in regional government contracts by vastly inflating their bills through a nonprofit sports foundation, Instituto Nóos, and then diverting money to offshore companies.
If found guilty
One of the regional governments the foundation secured funding from was the Balearics and yesterday, MPs voted unanimously that, if the Duke is found guilty of having misappropriated public funds, that he and his partner be made to return the money.
Also in the motion tabled by the opposition Socialists, was that the Duke and Duchess be stripped of their titles.
The Duke, Iñaki Urdangarin, has already been asked by the government and Palma City Council to refrain from using his title in public, but the Socialists want him stripped of his title.
However, the Partido Popular voted against the motion on the grounds that he was awarded the title for marrying the King's youngest daughter, Cristina, who, as yet, has not been implicated in the investigation and, the Duke continues to deny any wrong doing and neither of the two men have been charged.
Bail appeal
And, as a result are appealing against the 8.2 million euros in civil bail the Palma court, which is investigating the case, set for the Duke and his partner.
The Duke and Duchess did not travel to Palma for the traditional Easter mass at the Cathedral this year.
