Palma.For many, the sharp decline came against the expected run of play with the tourist industry expecting a gloomy Easter period, but it appears that the build up for Easter did create jobs and some optimism.
Last month the number of people officially registered out of work dropped by 3'371 reducing the total number of unemployed to 90'576.
However, as local union leaders were quick to point out, the fall in the number of jobless does not automatically mean that they all found work.
For many, they have been forced to sign off from the social security because they are no longer entitled to benefit so may well have drifted into the black market in a desperate attempt to make a living.
But, compared to March last year, 5'546 people were out of work in the Balearics taking the year-on-year rate of unemployment to 5.77 percent which has encouraged the Balearic government.
With all of the region's main tourist markets forecasting a long and busy season, the government hopes that the trend will continue and that in turn eventually leads to an improvement in consumer confidence and the local economy.
At a national level, the March decline did come as a welcome surprise for the central government.
Figures show that the number of people registered as unemployed edged down by a little under 5'000 in March, the first reduction for the month in five years.
The Ministry for Employment that the decline showed the government's policies are working. The scale of the task remains huge though as the number registered as unemployed stands at 5.04 million.
Spain is battling to emerge from its second recession in just over three years.
Among its problems, the Spanish economy is trying to recover from the collapse of the once-booming real estate sector, which has partly contributed to an unemployment rate of around 26 percent.
