TRAFFIC heading to and from Alcudia returned to normal yesterday when the Council of Majorca re-opened the Sa-Pobla to Alcudia stretch of main road which has been closed for improvements for the past month. The main access road to Alcudia should have been re-opened at the end of last month but the road works took longer than expected and even yesterday, resurfacing on one side of the road continued forcing traffic onto a single lane. However, while the 30-day road closure complicated access and has caused a nightmare for some drivers, the Council of Majorca is confident that road safety has been greatly improved with the removal of one of the island's worst black spots - the Pollensa intersection.
The new roundabout has been built and visibility improved.
4.5 MILLION
At a cost of 4.5 million euros, the Alcudia road has also been widened, levelled out and the road re-surfaced.
Exits to the various industrial sites and the rubbish dump for heavy goods vehicles have also been improved.
The project is however not entirely completed.
Diversion signs remained in place yesterday and road workers will be continuing to improve the road until July.
While work on the road is over, the drainage ditches alongside the road have to be improved and repaired.
Residents in and around Alcudia and the north east of the island who regularly use the stretch of road are relieved that the road works have come to an end and hope that the entire project is going to be completed on time; just ahead of the peak of the summer tourism season.
Many drivers have also been having to deal with the diversions and traffic disruptions caused by the Inca to Alcudia motorway extension project.
