LOCAL PEOPLE PROTEST OVER CALVIA ROADWORKS PEGUERA

TRADERS and residents who are being affected by Calvia Council works along the Peguera boulevard have officially complained about the inconvenience they are suffering, particularly as the works programme is now behind schedule - it should have been completed on 1st February.

The surfacing in the area is undergoing radical changes and local people are saying that the boulevard is losing its charm, being converted from a paved environment into a totally tarmacked one.

The Association of Tourist Businesses said in a statement yesterday that “it's unacceptable that we now have to face the opening of the tourist season with drainage channels still open and heavy machinery sprawled over the boulevard.” The Association claimed that everyone will be adversely affected by the works delay - traders, residents and tourists.

A spokesman for the Majorcan Unionist party in Calvia, Isidre Cañellas, has lent his voice to the affray saying that the works should have started in November as soon as the tourist season was over, and not in January.” Cañellas has also applied to Calvia Council on behalf of those who have, or certainly will, suffer financial losses as a result of the delay. “These people should be compensated,” he said yesterday.
