Bad weather risks

SHELTERS WILL REMAIN OPEN LONGER

THE Majorca Institute of Social Services and Sports have activated the level 2 Emergency Winter Plan because of the drop in temperatures and the prediction of a cold spell for the next few days
This alert will be taken up by all the shelters and services which form part of the Network of Social Insertion.
With this change in level, the Institute is hoping to be able to alert the people who are in a situation of risk or social exclusion and live on the streets to the risks of the lower temperatures. If these people are aware of the risks they face then the Institute can take better care of them.
The Emergency Plan was put in place on November 25 and consists of three levels of alert. These levels change depending on a series of conditions dictated by the weather and each change of level is activated by the reports received from the National Meteorology Office. Level 2 is dictated by a weather situation which has a medium or moderate risk for people who live on the streets because of their circumstances.
The services of the Institute are able to maintain a situation of alert in this case because of income from the Mobile Social Emergency Unit (UMES).
Its reception centres for the homeless will remain open for longer hours than normal in order to guarantee shelter to all those who want it.
