Sa Gerreria residents threaten to take late night noise issue to court

STAFF REPORTER

PALMA
RESIDENTS in the central Palma district of Sa gerreria have had enough of the late night noise caused by the “Ruta Martiana” - a Tuesday night pub crawl - past their homes and are looking to take legal action against the offending bars, cafés and restaurants who fail to acknowledge the law.

Ferran Tarongi, the President of the Canamunt Residents' Association said yesterday that there were 50 or so local people attending yesterday's meeting and there was a unanimous decision to seek legal advice. It was apparently the first meeting of the association where owners of late night establishments have not been present to try and solve the dispute as previous attempts at reaching agreement have come to nothing.

Neighbours say that there are an increasing number of people taking part in the Tuesday night “pub crawl” and that since the introduction of the no-smoking ban, rowdy revellers have been congregating in streets in the suburb beneath people's bedroom windows to smoke outside. Establishment owners are consequently saying that it is not they who are responsible for the noise.

Residents are claiming that they and their families can't sleep. Palma City Council is meanwhile conducting a noise contamination survey in the area.
