The Majorcan Socialist coalition PSM-IV-ExM claimed yesterday that changing the name of the Balearic capital city and municipality from Palma to Palma de Mallorca is illegal. The coalition says that regional statutes make no allowance for changing the name of the municipalities.
For this reason, the party has written to the Public Administration ministry in Madrid and asked them not to accept the change and to allow the name Palma to remain as was. Although the Balearic Parliament officially approved the name change a week ago, a new name will not be officially accepted until the ministry's registry has logged it. Coalition spokesman claim the name change is purely being made to satisfy bureaucracy in Madrid.
