Free Europe Day concert in Palma this Sunday

Palma.—Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe.
There are two separate designations of Europe Day: 5 May for the Council of Europe, and 9 May for the European Union (EU).
For the EU, the day is also known as Schuman Day, commemorating the historical declaration by French foreign minister Robert Schuman.
The Council of Europe's day reflects its own establishment in 1949, while the European Union's day celebrates the day the EU's predecessor was proposed in 1950.

Europe Day is one of a number of European symbols designed to foster unity among Europeans and this Sunday morning Palma's Municipal Band will be giving a free concert in the Plaza Mayor to celebrate Europe Day.

The event will begin at midday when the Balearic Minister for Presidential Affairs will present the annual Europe Day awards and then, at around 12.10pm, the Municipal Band will strike up and perform two acts which will last for about 40 minutes.

The concert will include pasadobles and even The Mask of Zorro.
After the concert, the Robert Schuman Declaration will be read out and that will be followed by the closing act, the singing of the European Anthem, Ode to Joy taken from the final complete symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven.
