Palma.Work is already underway on creating the Calvia Beach Resort by the world leading Majorcan hotel chain Meliá Hotels and yesterday, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Borrego, was given a guided tour of the area which Sol Meliá intends to convert into a world leading, luxury resort.
The project was first unveiled in October of last year and the heart of the new resort will link up four of the hotel chain's establishments in the resort while improving access to the complex from the other two, the Sol Guadalupe and the Sol Magaluf Park.
The company hopes to attract a more upscale clientele to the traditionally budget-minded beach resort and the Balearic government enthusiastically backed the plan, although it will not contribute financially.
However, it has declared the project as being of general interest and is therefore helping to fast track all the necessary planing permissions etc. so that the project can be completed as quickly as possible.
The investment in the mega resort is totally private, but the Secretary of State said that the Calvia Beach Resort by Sol Meliá is the perfect example of how the public and private sectors can work together for the good of the economy. This is a superb example of how aging resorts can and should be redeveloped around Spain, the Secretary of State said while being given a personal tour of the development site by the Vice-president of Meliá Hotels, Gabriel Escarrer and other local politicians including the Balearic Minister for Tourism. Magalluf was the first destination in the Balearics for mass British tourism in the 1960s, but it has declined since. However, now it has a bright future with plans for the complex to feature state-of-the-art attractions such as a wave house and new beach bars.
Gabriel Escarrer said; we want to send out a positive message and this project will help to revive the fortunes of the resort and the Balearics as a whole.
