Architect Jorn Utzon's home to be heritage site

Palma.—The Council of Majorca said yesterday that its Historic Heritage Committee had taken the decision to list the building, “Can Lis”, as being a monument of regional architectural importance.

The house which Utzon - the architect on the Sydney Opera House project - built in Portopetro, has been recognised by the Committee as one of the most outstanding contributions to contemporary architecture on Majorca.

A Council spokesman said that the listed item will include the ground surrounding the house. “The house cannot be considered in isolation from the unspoiled territory in which it was built,”he explained. But Utzon's former home was just one item on the agenda of the Historic Heritage Committee yesterday.

Technicians want to see urgent action taken on the circular walls of Bellver Castle where vertical cracks have appeared. Work also needs to be done, said the Council spokesman, on the exterior part of the walls which are below ground level, and on its moat.

The town council in Santanyi meanwhile, have been told by the same committee that they must erect stainless steel staircases to provide access to the towers of Sa Torre de Sa Roca and Sa Torre de Portopetro.

The Committee has also listed as a heritage item a work of art by internationally renowned Majorcan sculptor Miquel Barceló, currently kept at Son Pisanet in Bunyola, entitled Vase 1/2 Cranes 1999.
