10 of 14 ancient trees in Soller's main square will have to be replaced

Technicians at Soller town hall confirmed yesterday that 10 of the 14 historic trees in Soller's Plaza Constitució are “beyond hope” and will need to be uprooted to prevent any danger of their falling down. Environment Councillor Joan Ruiz said that although he was still looking at the possibility of leaving just the trunks in place, expert advice is for the trees to be removed completely and replaced by others which are already mature. Ruiz said that the cost of doing so would be high but because the old trees were so much a part of the character of Plaza Constitució, it's one that the council has to address. And the reason the trees have died? Christmas decorations hung round the trees a few years ago by the council cut off the moisture supply.
